I would suggest there be some kind of examination other than the psyche. Some things should be ruled out before presuming it is anxiety response. Should this be the case and he is actually suffering from anxiety, one must become aware there are deep seated emotions which have been implanted over the years.. Until those are removed, there will be no correction of the problem. The pills only diminish it but, the problem remains untouched.
References :
Ashley,

For 3 years I had panic attacks and each time I literally thought I was going to die. I didn't tell anybody about this either. Then, one night, a friend found me hyperventilating in bed and rushed me to the hospital. Anyway, they told me it was a panic attack. They gave me tranquilizers and the name of a therapist that I really liked. He told me about this program:

http://TheBestListOnline.Com/cure-panic-attacks.php

He really shouldn't have because this program cured my attacks.

I kept my appointments with him anyway because I liked talking to him and he also noticed how much more relaxed I was since the panic attacks stopped.

Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck,
Martha
References :
Well, yeah, you could go to a doctor that might give you medication that may or may not work.......
or you could do that and try this easy to learn free technique, used for many emotional/physical issues.... or you could do both......
I would go to this site and at least try it... www.emofree.com it is free, downloadable, and there are doctors endorsing this, and trained people if you dont want to do it yourself.... which you can...
See for your self.... and when it works, pass it on to others.......as a way of saying thanks...
References :
You absolutely don't hear voices. You can feel like you're choking and your heart can race (palpitations). You can also feel like you're having a heart attack. Sometimes it's just emotional, severe anxiety without
physical symptoms.

Take deep, slow breaths- in through your nose and out your mouth, repeat..
Also, visualize (think of) something that calms you like nice scenery, someone you like or whatever it takes.

It does help certain people.
But please get to a doctor a.s.a.p!
References :
You are correct in questioning if medication alone is going to help your friend's anxiety/panic attacks. It will not. The other problem with different types of medications is that some are addicting- such as xanax so over time he will develop a tolerance and will need more to help him. Then when he wants to get off of it he can go into withdrawl. So he needs other things to help.

He needs to learn relaxation techniques such as yoga/medication as you mention. He should also see a therapist who specializes in cognitive behavioral techniques. These techniques can help your friend connect the thoughts in his mind to his symptoms and how to control for them.

If he is convinces he is suffering from some health problem he would have tests to rule it out. I don't know how old he is but whatever, a stress test at age 40 is not an unreasonable request to rule out heart problems. Blood tests for thyroid problems and other issues can be done. If the Dr has already run tests and has not found anything wrong with him- and he is still focused on his health - a therapist is still a good thing to help with his thoughts. Often panic/anxiety attacks happen when we feel his life is out of control. How much stress is he under? Does he have a lot going on with work and/or family? These attacks are a sign to pay attention to how we manage our stress and that we aren't coping in the right way. He may never be cured but he could get things to be manageable if he was able to recognize his thoughts and cope properly with his stress.

You are a good friend to be so concerned about him. Good luck with trying to get him help. Realize he needs to want it, you can only do so much.
References :
prevously worked in mental health field.

Most panic attack sufferers will ALWAYS associate panic attack with the activity or place that they were in at the time and try to avoid them. This is where the MAIN problems begin as each time you are forced into the situation that caused the attack, you automatically assume that it will happen again and avoid it.

You need to understand that the problem here is your irrational fear, NOT the situation, NOT your symptoms.

Panic attack CANNOT cause heart failure or a heart attack.
Panic attack CANNOT cause you to stop breathing.
Panic attack CANNOT cause you to faint.
Panic attack CANNOT cause you to "go crazy."

This is the TRUTH. It may not feel like it at that point in time, but it’s the truth. Believe in it.

If you have gone to the ER, I can guarantee that the doctor will tell you that you are fine and nothing is wrong with you.

Hence, in order to stop panic attacks, you need to work on these fears. You need to reassure yourself that you will be fine and BELIEVE that you will recover. Accept that you are a panic attack sufferer and do everything you can to overcome it, don't run or hide from it...and certainly don't fear it. This is the KEY to stopping it forever.
References :
Learn how you can beat panic attacks now at http://www.squidoo.com/beating-panic-attacks-steps

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

You can't stop them when you're having one, you just have to try and breathe slowly and controlled, and remind yourself over and over you're okay until it passes. They don't last long.

Don't you mean "how do you prevent a panic attack"?
Thinking and worrying about panic attacks can make you more anxious and the more anxious you are, the more likely you are to have a panic attack. HOWEVER, you should try to forget about it, because no-one can predict panic attacks!!
So just know that it's not going to kill you, nowhere near that. So you have no logical reason to fear them. Just remind yourself that if it does happen, it will be over quickly and you will be back to normal.

There's really nothing else you can do.

DO NOT get medication if you have such a big fear of them. Medication can CAUSE panic attacks and can make them 10x worse. EG when you try to come off or if you miss a tablet or if you take too high a dose. If you are not having them like every day there's absolutely no reason for you to be even considering medication. Good luck
