Does anyone know of a good natural over the counter treatment for mild depression and panic attacks.?

I tried St. Johns wort but It did not work for me.

Hi, I’m the author of
http://panicattackresearch.blogspot.com

Ok, I have successfully overcalmed panic-attacks. Though my site has a few tips, let me give you a few new ones.

The best way to stop having panic-attack is to distract yourself. I’m sure you tend to think of your attack when you have "nothing to do". Not offending you here, what I meant by that is.. when your mind is idle or have nothing to do, you tend to start thinking about your problems and that is how panic-attacks start to come in. So how do you break that pattern?
The solution: Keep your mind busy.

You can try hypnosis but daydreaming is the best one. Imagine the person whom you fallen for is right beside you, caressing you and patting you to calm you down. Imagine your future life with him/her happily. Think of positive thoughts.

Click Here! to learn how to stop panic attack naturally.

As for your depression, you need to also break the habit. I am sure your depression is caused by your panic-attacks - it has ruined your self-confidence and esteem. I recommend you do what you like - do your hobbies and interest. And most importantly, set a goal in your life - say to earn $1 million by a certain age. Go wild in your goal-setting, believe in yourself. Remember, you are NOT alone.

I doubt you will find anything over the counter… if you have any type of depression, let alone panic attacks you should go see your doctor. It may only seem mild to you, but it takes one tic to make you blow!
Go see your doctor… he/she will give you medication that is safe and actually something that will help.

I do not think there is anything over the counter for depression and anxiety, but I will tell you that I have been taking Zoloft for 8 years now and it has made my anxiety disappear. You have to get prescription for it though. I hope you feel better :)

If you have trouble sleeping as well, which many people with anxiety do, you may find Melatonin to be very helpful.

Melatonin is an herbal sleep aid. It is the exact same chemical that your brain produces naturally for sleep. It doesn’t make you groggy in the morning or anything like sleeping pills. It’s very gentle and effective and non-addictive.

I started taking it for insomnia, but I found that it also helped with my depression and GREATLY reduced my anxiety. Maybe that was just because I was sleeping better, or maybe it has some properties that help with those problems.

There are 1mg, 2mg, and 3mg tabs. I take the 3mg ones. You should only take one, about an hour before you want to go to sleep. Don’t mix them with alcohol (some people say it’s ok, but I felt quite ill one time when I did it, so just err on the side of caution). Only take them at night.

If you have sleep troubles, give it a shot, and see if it helps.

I know of a wonderful herb that reduces anxiety. It is called Kava Kava. It is available at places like whole foods and GNC and is virtually harmless. It is sometimes refered to as "herbal valium". Since homeopathic stuff is not regulated by the fda, different brands have different concentrations. Experiment. But this is something that WILL calm you down, i experimented on myself with it for many years and documented the results, which range from calming and relaxation to a very mild "high."

St. John’s Wort is a popular all-natural alternative to using pharmacuticals. However, it is recommended to use with caution because it usually performs like a pharmacutical drug . Did you take it for a few weeks? It normally takes about a month for it to start to take effect. One should not stop and start this supplement since one should wean themselves off of it. Unfortunatley, it is not FDA approved and there is no recommended dosage for your personal height, weight, etc. like a pharmacutical drug that a doctor prescribes for you personally. I do not know of any other supplement over the counter that helps with depression or panic attacks other than taking calcium/magnesium and using meditation regularly. You should see a doctor to make sure you are diagnosed with depression and to not self-diagnose or prescribe supplements or medications.

well nobody has a prozac deficiency but you could have vitamin/mineral deficiencies

    do you take a multivitamin?
    do you get enough sunlight?
    do you exercise?
do you consume enough omega3 oils - found in fish, walnuts, flaxseed - if you don’t that can cause you problems.

    for starters anyway..

exercise helps up-regulate dopamine and it’s receptors, chocolate mimics serotonin, and sunlight helps both- along with Proper sleep and a decent diet. Those are really all you can do. St. John’s wort was studied by the NIH, and found lacking in efficacy, unless you count the placebo effect.

calcium (a supplement, not just milk lol!) and melatonin are supposed to help- i’m sorry you have to feel this way; i have depression and anxiety, but the OTC stuff doesn’t quite cut for me! you can also go to a vitamin or herb store and they will probably be of help if they aren’t just there to pass time away!

No, but you may want to make an appointment to see a doctor to talk about what you are struggling with. You may also want to try Yoga and breathing methods. Try taking 5 breaths in a row in this method: 5 seconds inhaling through your nose, hold for 5 seconds, exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds; repeat 5 times. Look up progressive relaxation too. This helps a lot. Good luck!

the best thing to do is talk to your primary doctor. You can explain to them your situation/issue/symptoms. They can prescribe you a medication. If you make it clear that you are not interested in prescription drugs they should be able to lead you to alternatives. The following of lists is things i have heard of, not saying that it works or that i have used it. ..I have heard that st.johns wart herbal can be taking for light depression. You can do an internet search about it. You also can talk to a chiropractor, doctor of Naturapathy, chinese herbalist, exercise, adjust your diet, get sleep, and you may even consider accupuncture.

SAM-E helps some people, but depression and anxiety are best if monitored by a doctor even if you choose over the counter medications.

    Dear Curious G.

I have included some international links for you to read and learn more as I do not have the knowledge to help you personally. Natural products did not help me either so I had to resort to pharmaceuticals and hope for the best.

When you say that St.John’s Wort did not work for you, were you taking a reputable brand? Eating properly? Not smoking? Walking at least for exercise if not more? Limiting caffine intake? All these factors affect how the drug is absorbed into the brain.

    Hope some of this helps,

    Anctemple.
