Can benadryl be used to stop panic attacks?

I have been having panic attacks and I was on xanax but I have ran out and want something that can keep me calm because these panic attacks are really uncomfortable. I have read that benadryl can be a help for anxiety and panic attacks. Has anyone ever taken this for panic attacks? Does benadryl work to stop panic attacks?

Most medications used to treat a panic attack are prescription medications and should only be taken in consultation with your doctor. One of the important drugs in this category is Xanax (Alprazolam). However, benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an over-the-counter antihistamine medicine that may help to reduce your anxiety during a panic attack. http://www.ehow.com/how_2177125_control-panic-attacks.html

A sedative depresses the central nervous system and makes you calmer, more relaxed, and can reduce anxiety levels. In this respect, perhaps some people may self-medicate for panic attacks.

Although Benadryl may make some people feel more relaxed and relieve their anxiety, it makes others feel more anxious.
In the end though, for a panic attack Benadryl is not really the solution. If it was, most doctors would be prescribing it for your panic. The fact is, there are so many drugs out there that are effective for panic attacks. One will be right for you.

No benadryl is NOT for panic attacks and to use it in a way that is not recommended is dangerous.

Get your medication refilled or call your doctor and have him call one in.

I strongly suggest you don’t take benadryl but speak with your doctor about the choices for you. There are many options you have. If you want, speak to your doctor about benadryl as well. But the thing is, there are so many better panic - related drugs that will do a better job for you.
